We’ve gotten a lot of pings about the amazingly awesome 24HoursAtSundance, which featured Thingfo widgets for the whole contest as well as for Asthon Kutcher, Kevin Rose, Irina Slutsky, Cj Peters, Meghan Asha, Matt Marshall & Shira Lazar to name, oh…. all the web luminaries involved in that event. Speaking of web luminaries, I thought I’d share some of the newest and coolest sites using Thingfo.
First off, [fung'ke] [blak] [chik] (according to the site, an “adj characterized by originality, modishness & unconventionalism”) records a “sampling of… life experiences mixed with a bit of satire as well” of a DC Metro writer, professional, and mother. The design of this site rocks, and the content has, as advertised, a healthy mix of topics and tone, focused on the experience of being an African-American woman in these strange times. I especially like her quote of the day box and “today in history” videos at the top of the page, it’s a neat way to introduce her perspective and easily keep the site fresh. She’s using her SocialSite widget (available here) to tap into Web 2.0, tracking all the activity on and about her site on the social web, as well as her twitter and youtube posts.
The next site I found making good use of our good system, myphillynetwork.com, is a tech, gadget, and social networking blog. It seems focused mainly on Web 2.0 social apps, and gets regularly updated with interesting news and opinion. It keeps the widget simple, tracking inbound blogs, twitters, and comments. I like how this shows the flexibility of the SocialSite system, as the blogger AnthonyF uses it not so much as a plug into Web2.0 but as a tool to conserve space. Many sites have three separate blocks, each tracking one of the streams that, on myphillynetwork, SocialSite consolidates into one. Neat!
Moving on, I found a strange but very useful site collecting thousands of mp3 blogs and offering a plethora of different ways to search through them, play them, and track them, Rick Shide’s Chewbone. This guy has a THING for widgets! I’ve never seen a side bar so full of different interesting little pieces of webtech. We’re on there, proving his good taste, nicely themed to match the green-and-yellow color scheme and tracking Chewbone’s impact throughout the web.
Blahgirls is a super-slick, very brightly-colored celebrity-gossip blog featuring videos of cute flash-animation celebrity-obsessed teenagers being celebrity-obsessed and clever. And cute. It also has something to do with Ashton Kutcher. It’s actually quite funny, new animations come out every Monday, supplemented with a very funny bit called “Stewart’s Hot Minute” who is a young gay male member of the gang, and the blog updates all the time. They’re using a very pink SocialSite widget (hurray!) and it’s chock full of content: del.icio.us bookmarks, qik videos , twitters, (including “ashton”s qik account and “mrskutcher” twitter, that’s how I know…) youtube, comments, posts, inbound blogs and more… good stuff. This site seems to have a lot of fans, if anyone has seen a fan site using the widget who deserves a shout-out, let us know!
Finally, KonsoleKingz has claimed the territory “Where Hip-Hop and Games Combine”, which seems like pretty rich soil. Their massive content, in written, video, and podcast form, includes game reviews, trailers, and, just to make it interesting, the smoking hot “Konsole Queenz”. I like. They’ve also got “gamer cards” so if you’ve got the right hardware and games, you can find these guys and challenge their reign. They’re using their SocialSite widget to follow all of the activity going on outside their site: all the del.icio.us bookmarks, diggs, twitters, qik and youtube videos, and flickr photos that they and their fans put up get tracked and displayed in one sweet place.
All right. I had fun with this. These sites are all really cool, and they get massive bonuses for having the intelligence, class, and good looks to use Thingfo’s SocialSite so very well. If you’re using SocialSite, or find a site using it, drop me a line or post in the comments, because I will definitely be doing this again.
